Amanda + Joe :: Love... Take Two!

Amanda + Joe were awesome... again!  We took their original engagement pictures last year, as the wedding was planned for June 08.  But, due to some health issues, they were forced to postpone the wedding until this March.  So, they came back in for Part 2 of the engagement session, and it was brilliant!  Their photo shoot landed smack dab in the middle of the warmest day of 2009... it was probably 60+ degrees in February.  We'll take it!

We had a wonderful experience at our convention in Las Vegas last weekend, and if you followed me on Twitter at all, you know that there was a lot going on for those 7 days. We learned from some of the world's most famous and experienced photographers, as well as picked up great new items and ideas for the business.

As a businessman, or woman, no matter what field you're in, the best thing you can do for your business is to work ON it, instead of just working IN it. It's very easy to get burdened down by routine and just keeping up with the workflow, but you often end up overlooking things that need to be addressed, or changed. Here's a small example: I just realized the other day that as people came into our house to meet with us, they walked by our refrigerator which was totally plastered with a mess of old Christmas cards and family snapshots. Now you may or may not have noticed it, but it was an eyesore that we've walked past for months. It felt unprofessional when our eyes were opened to it.

Honestly, we are thrilled about the direction Gehman Photography is going! 2009 is going to be a wild ride as we prepare to launch into something in the next year that we've had our eyes on for a long time, and it has me giddy to say the least!

Also, as of today, we only have 4 spots available for 2009 weddings!  So, if you know someone who is coming off of a very special Valentine's Day ;) be sure to let them know that we're almost full for the year!

    So long Vegas!

We are sitting in the airport in Las Vegas right now, finally getting access to free internet! Imagine that!  Anyway, we had a great time learning from some of the industry leaders, and internationally-recognized photographers, and the most encouraging part of it all..... we're on the right track!  Now, we're are very excited to get back to doing what we love to do, and trying out some new things this year with some new equipment we've acquired! ;)  We have several engagement sessions lined up waiting to hit the blog, as well as some portrait sessions, so look for those to hit the blog next Monday!

Our plane just rolled up to the gate, so I'd better be getting packed up.  Have a great rest of the week/weekend, and we'll see you on Monday!

    Be blessed....
    -Rodney

PS  Today is my 29th Birthday!!! Happy Birthday to me! :)

This weekend finds us in Las Vegas for the Wedding and Portrait Photography International convention and trade show. It's our first time going to this show and we are very excited about the workshops we will be taking. If you want to follow along, I'll be blogging only on Twitter the next couple of days.

    Michelle + Sam :: Love

I should have titled this entry: Michelle + Sam + Jodi + Rodney = FREEZING COLD!!!  The temperature was pushing 4˚ when we photographed this engagement session, but hey... the pictures turned out just fine! And that was because Michelle + Sam rocked it!  We are definitely looking forward to their wedding, because they were great to work with, and we know that they are tough! :)

    Competition Results

We have been members of the Professional Photographers of Iowa association for several years now, and one of the highlights of the convention is the print and album competitions. Of course, there are several speakers workshops and a trade show where we can update equipment and learn more about photography in general, but the competition is where we pit our work against our peers', basically to see if it's any good. :)

Jodi and I entered two of our wedding albums this year, and we entered them together as "multi-maker" albums. We're honored to report that one of our albums (click here to view Jeff and Rachel) scored the highest of any wedding album OR print! So it got 1st place, plus a Fuji Masterpiece Award (our first one!) and a Memorial Award for being the highest scoring wedding album. So now, we'll send it to regionals and nationals and see what happens on a bigger stage. We also received the second place award with Chris and Marcie's Album, and I somehow made the top ten of non-master photographers in Iowa!

Also, I got third place with this print called "Love Rocks"....

The most special part of the whole deal is that Jodi and I get to share all of these honors and achievements with each other. That's the part that we love about working together. Not only do we get to work together thru the normal routines of our job, but we get to celebrate our accomplishments together. I know it's cliche, and everyone says it, but we are so blessed. We thank God all the time for the life He's given us, and we pray that we'll reflect some glory back to Him in the process.

I know we're not the best photographers out there. We know we have a lot to learn. But I know that we are exactly where God wants us in February of 2009, and that He is letting us be a small part of His story. And that, my friends, is far superior to any award that photography could ever bring us.
